Tokyo 2020 Olympics, First in History Postponed
Tokyo 2020 Olympics is the first Olympics in the history of the multi-branch event to be postponed.
Since it was first held in Athens, Greece, in 1896, the Olympics have never been postponed. However, the Olympics had been canceled three times.
The first Olympic Games to be canceled occurred in 1916. The sixth Olympics scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, were canceled due to the First World War which took place from July 1914 to November 1918. The Olympics then had another cancellation in 1940. The XII Olympics were originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo, but then moved to Helsinki, Finland.
The Second World War which lasted from 1939 to 1945 then made the 1940 Olympics canceled. The 1944 Olympics scheduled for London, England, were also canceled due to the Second World War.
London later hosted the 1948 Olympics, Helsinki Olympics 1952, and Tokyo held the 1964 Olympics.
The Olympics also experienced boycotts in 1976 (Montreal, Canada), 1980 (Moscow, Soviet Union) and 1984 (Los Angeles, United States). However, the Olympics in all three editions are still running.
Tokyo is the first Asian city to be twice chosen to host the Summer Olympics after 1964. On its way to hosting the 2020 Olympics, Tokyo defeated Istanbul, Turkey and Madrid, Spain in the final bidding that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September 2013 .
